AN HiSTORIC CITY
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is situated on the north bank of the Tagus (Tejo) River, on Europe’s Atlantic coast. It is the westernmost city in continental Europe but its location in the center of Portugal makes exploring the country, and beyond, simple – it is only around 300 km to the resorts of the Algarve in the south and around 400 km to the northern border with Spain.
Lisbon offers its visitors a wide variety of sights and activities, including excellent culinary spots, picturesque streets, and buildings, breath-taking views, areas of historical interest and some of the best beaches in Europe, all just a few kilometers from the city center. The city is extremely safe and tourist friendly.

The venue
The ICS-UL - Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon is an institution devoted to research and advanced training in the social sciences. The mission of the ICS is to study contemporary societies, with special emphasis on the Portuguese reality and the societies and cultures with which Portugal has historical relations, both in the European space and in other geographical spaces. These activities are carried out in an interdisciplinary context, and through seven different Research Groups.
ICS has always been rated as an Institution of Excellence (the highest rating) by international evaluation panels (1996, 1999, 2005, 2008 and 2014). These evaluations have provided a stimulus for innovative and interdisciplinary research, for high-quality teaching and for enhancing the social relevance of knowledge produced by ICS. Over fifty years, the driving force behind ICS has been the combination of researchers and the ideas they investigate with a scientific culture characterised by methodological and theoretical diversity.
